Description
My daughter is a qualified Primary School teacher and as her children started to learn to write she asked me if I could make a suitable wooden letter board to help them learn. Working with a graphic designer I created my first board with uses Precursive lettering, this has lead in and out on lowercase letters.
But schools change and the way they taught handwriting at the school my grandchildren attend changed. So I created a Print or Non-Cursive letter board with no lead in or out.
Then they changed school and the new school used a different handwriting scheme called Kinetic Letters. And so my third design was born. This scheme has no lead ins but some letters have a lead out.
So there are now three versions available:
Precursive
Print or Non-Cursive
Kinetic
If you are unsure which is best for your child it is best to ask their teacher as different Primary schools use different handwriting schemes.
All these boards are compatible with many resources including those provided by Twinkl.
On the reverse, is the alphabet in uppercase.
The Montessori method is that by repeating things physically they build up a muscle memory and eventually that will become second nature and a writing habit when they put pen to paper.
Our letter boards are made from solid European Oak. It starts a rough wood, is then planed smooth, then sanded even smoother before being carved. It is then sanded again before being finished with a toy safe finishing oil. The boards are fully compliant with regulations and are UKCA/CE Certified.
Our letter boards are 39cm long and 19.5cm wide and come with a wooden stylus.
They have so many different uses. If you look on Pinterest for Montessori letter boards you will find lots of ideas. Just a few:
– trace letters with a finger
– trace letters with a small stick
– put small seeds, pom-poms, rice in the letters
– put paper over to do ribbings and then get the children to write the letter inside the rubbing
– games Can you find the …? How do you spell …?
– Use pipecleaners to make a shape that fits in to the letter
– cover some letters Which letter comes next?
The boards are double sided so you can do upper and lower case activities. It is a multi sensory way of learning and it works on the motor skills and muscle memory needed to be able to form letters correctly consistently.
Wood is a natural product and every piece is different and has it’s own character. These are individually made so no two items are identical. The one you receive may look slightly different to the one pictured due to the differences in wood grain.
